STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun says he intends to sign a new contract.

ESPN.com reported Thursday that Calhoun had reached agreement on a four-year deal, citing a statement released by his agent. Calhoun said he wanted to end any speculation about his future, and hopes his decision will “show people that I am committed to the future of UConn basketball.”

UConn Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway said he looks forward to having the contract signed soon and is excited that Calhoun has decided to stay at the school.

The Hall of Fame coach will turn 68 in May, and has dealt with several health issues over the past few years. He missed seven games this season with an undisclosed medical condition.

UConn (17-15) lost Tuesday in the first round of the Big East tournament, and is expected to receive a bid to play in the NIT.
