In Our View: Cheers & Jeers

State plan will boost WSU Vancouver; interchange project needs a funding boost

Cheers: To a new long-term plan to provide more money for undergraduate education at Washington State University’s Vancouver campus. Faced with additional cuts in public funding for higher education, the state proposes to focus its resources on increasing the number of college graduates in the state by 40 percent in the next decade. That mission is perfectly aligned with branch campuses such as WSU Vancouver. One of the key arguments for establishing the campus was that Southwest Washington’s work force lacked bachelor’s degrees and higher, and there was almost no access to degree programs here. Now, more than 20 years later, the campus has provided thousands with a path to a better career. Some critics of the state’s plan say undergraduate education is emphasized at the expense of graduate work and research. Those are important components of a major university, but campus Chancellor Hal Dengerink told Columbian reporter Libby Tucker this month that there are other avenues to fund those programs.
