KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan officials say four suicide attackers struck different parts of the dangerous southern city of Kandahar and casualties have been reported.

Mohammad Shad Farooqi, deputy police chief in Kandahar province, said the explosions occurred near a hotel, a prison, a mosque and at an intersection in the center of Kandahar.

Kandahar’s mayor, Gulam Hamidi, said several buildings collapsed and he was sending equipment to dig through rubble.

Zemarai Bashary, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, said an unknown number of casualties were reported. He said police and soldiers have secured the city.

Kandahar is the south’s main commercial center and the major city in Kandahar province, the birthplace of the Taliban.
