PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — “Sunshine Week” begins on Sunday, a national initiative to talk about the importance of open government and freedom of information.

Sunshine Week is led by the American Society of News Editors. But it includes print, broadcast and online news media, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools and others interested in the public’s right to know.

In Oregon, Attorney General John Kroger has already kicked off a yearlong review of state public records law.

Kroger says nearly 430 exemptions to the law have piled up since it was approved in 1973, and it’s time to clear a few away.

He’s going to recommend some changes to the 2011 Legislature, and hopes to reduce the cost and delays for obtaining public records.
