INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The chairman of the NCAA selection committee guarantees March Madness will be a “fantastic tournament,” despite an at-large field that is being roundly criticized as one of the worst in the event’s history.

Dan Guerrero led the panel that created the 65-team bracket, which includes small-conference teams such as Utah State and UTEP and left out big-conference teams such as Virginia Tech and Mississippi State.

Those decisions led to wide criticism of the bracket as a whole.

Guerrero said Monday, however, that teams are evaluated on their bodies of work, not their conferences, and that he was sure the tournament would live up to its reputation as one of America’s most popular sporting events.
