Published: March 16, 2010, 12:00am

Washington’s $6.3 million “Cash for Appliances” stimulus program began Monday.

The state is offering mail-in rebates to Washington residents who buy Energy Star-rated refrigerators and clothes washing machines from participating retailers in the state, or who provide a receipt that demonstrates they paid Washington sales tax on the purchase. Consumers are required to recycle their old refrigerators and are encouraged to recycle their washers.

The rebate is $75 for refrigerators with documented recycling and $100 for washing machines and is available until December 2011, or until the program runs out of money. Funding is provided by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. For more information visit http://www.cashforapplianceswa.com.
