Weather Eye: Hint of spring to return for the weekend

It sure felt like spring Monday, with afternoon temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s in some locations. I recorded a high of 68 degrees at my Salmon Creek weather station. That is the warmest it’s been since a high of 69 degrees March 6. And it looks like after a little downturn today, we should be back in the 60s Thursday through Saturday.

A weather system moving through today will leave behind some clouds and maybe a shower early on St. Patrick’s Day, with skies clearing by sunset. I would expect some frosty mornings later in the week as well.

Boy, I have to get used to this daylight-saving time regime. It seems like it was a hard transition this time; anyone else feel the same way? Maybe it was the shock of a little more daylight during waking hours or something.

With a return to warmer temperatures and fair skies Thursday and beyond, we will really get to enjoy the evenings. Time to clean up the backyard grill. It won’t be long before we get that 70-degree day; if it wasn’t for some easterly winds later in the week, we would. Offshore winds do warm us up this time of the year, but a late season arctic air mass is sliding mainly east of the Rockies and some cool and dry air will filter into the Columbia Basin and perhaps temper our highs.

At least the cold and snow will stay well to the east and we shall enjoy a rather benign weather pattern for a while. Oh, those frogs will surely be singing their springtime melody the next evening or two for sure.
