A 78-year-old Vancouver man who had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.34 when he struck a pedestrian with his car has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Kenneth Laufman was sentenced Friday by Clark County Superior Court Judge Roger Bennett for a Sept. 3, 2008, incident in which he hit and injured pedestrian Chris McDaniel. He had entered a guilty plea to vehicular assault Dec. 3.

McDaniel suffered serious injuries, including broken legs and pelvis, according to court documents.

The crash happened at the Mill Plain Boulevard and North Lieser Road intersection when Laufman ran a red light and hit McDaniel, who was walking in the crosswalk. The impact knocked McDaniel into the path of a tractor-trailer rig, according to court documents.

When questioned by police, Laufman said he had drank three or four beers before the crash. A blood draw showed he had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.34 percent, more than four times the legal threshold of 0.08 percent.
