Vancouver orchestra reprises raffle

Tickets accidentally omitted from first drawing

The symphony orchestra raffle that went sour last month has been reprised, and the new winner is a Southeast Portland woman.

The name chosen to win a 2005 Ford Mustang LE convertible was Cheryl Smith of Southeast Portland. The drawing was held at 12 noon on Monday, March 15, in the sixth floor hearing room of the Clark County Public Service Center. The car, donated by Carolyn Propstra, was valued at $16,500.

The nonprofit Vancouver Symphony Orchestra had held a raffle drawing last month, after selling tickets since October 2009. But after announcing that the prize belonged to Vancouver businessman Les Wolf, it was discovered that 89 raffle tickets had mistakenly been left out of the tumbler. The symphony contacted the Washington State Gambling Commission, which advised it to fix the pool and draw again.

Wolf was a gentleman about the goof, according to a VSO spokesman, and the overlooked 89 tickets were combined with the rest for a total of approximately 1,000 chances to win the redrawing.
