OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington education officials have picked 174 schools for the 2009 Washington Achievement Awards.

The schools are chosen for recognition based on achievement test results and graduation rates over the past few years. State officials say not every outstanding school will get the award every year.

Some schools are recognized for overall excellence and others are getting awards for their performance in language arts, math, science, gifted education and extended graduation rates.

The awards are being given by the State Board of Education and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

The schools will be recognized at celebrations around the state on May 5.
