Orange a confident-but-wary bunch as Vermont looms

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Syracuse might have taken Vermont lightly five years ago. Rest assured that won’t happen again.

Syracuse suffered a stunning overtime loss to the 13th-seeded Catamounts in the first round of the 2005 NCAA tournament, and when the teams meet again Friday night, there would seem to be even more at stake for the Orange.

Syracuse (28-4) is the regular-season champ of the Big East and the top seed in the West Regional, and there’s never been a No. 16 knock off a No. 1.

Vermont (25-9) will be making its first trip to the tournament since that signature victory, which certainly has served the school well. Senior forward Marqus Blakely said that game is the first thing that sticks in the minds of those who are recruited by Vermont.

The champions of the America East Conference have won 11 of their last 12 games, while Syracuse has dropped two straight.
