PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — TriMet general manager Fred Hansen says he will leave when his contract ends in June.

Hansen has led the agency through 11 years of ambitious and sometimes controversial rail expansion.

The 63-year-old leaves the agency as it struggles with budget challenges and is looking at fare increases and service cuts. But Hansen tells The Oregonian his plans had nothing to do with economic troubles. He says there’s never a right time to leave but he wanted to explore other things. He has no immediate plans for a new job.

In 2009, his annual salary was more than $250,000.
