Lady Washington gets cleaner engine

The Lady Washington is once again ready to set sail.

The Aberdeen-based ship was parked beginning in December because its engine no longer met California emissions standards. A replica of a freighter that was built in the 1750s, the modern Lady Washington traveled frequently to California as part of its living history educational mission.

On Thursday, the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority announced that the ship’s new engine has been installed and it will begin its spring and summer visits ports in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound next month. The U.S. Coast Guard is expected to approve the upgrade next week.

The ship’s original diesel engine was replaced with one that is expected to reduce the Lady Washington’s carbon footprint.

The upgrade was financed by a Seaport-organized capital campaign that has brought in more than $100,000 in donations and grants.
