Vancouver man arrested after parents assaulted

Vancouver, WA A 48-year-old Vancouver man was arrested Thursday for an alleged assault in which he threw a weighty candle holder at one parent's head and choked her while the other woman ran for help. The victims, both women, are in a domestic partnership, according to Vancouver Police Sgt. Wayne Reynolds.
Police said Randal Halderman was intoxicated at 1:50 p.m. when he allegedly assaulted Deloris Medeiros, 63, and Ruth Halderman, 73, after Halderman offered to give him a ride home. The two women share a condominium in the 13000 block of Northeast 59th Street.
Randal Halderman was arrested on suspicion of two counts of second-degree domestic violence and one count of fourth-degree domestic violence. He was also arrested on one count each of first-degree burglary, third-degree malicious mischief and fourth-degree assault, all stemming from an incident earlier Thursday afternoon.
Medeiros was transported to Southwest Washington Medical Center Thursday to be treated for a head injury, which police said was not life-threatening. A hospital official said Medeiros has been released.
Ruth Halderman was treated for injuries to her mouth that police say were caused by her son’s punches.
Randal Halderman was arrested at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday following reports of an unruly and bloody man refusing to leave a property in the 3200 block East 17th Street.
The Vancouver police and fire departments responded to the reported assault shortly before 2 p.m. They found Medeiros suffering from an open head wound and facial injuries, according to the release.
According to a detailed account of the alleged assault distributed by police, Randal Halderman got angry and began to yell after Ruth Halderman offered to drive him home. When Medeiros intervened he knocked her to the ground with a punch. He continued to punch and kick her in the head until Ruth Halderman intervened and he diverted his attention to her.
Ruth Halderman fled to a neighbor’s home and called police.
That’s when police said Randal Halderman continued his attack on Medeiros, striking her in the head with a 5-pound candle holder and choking her with a floor lamp until she eventually lost consciousness.

At about 1:10 p.m. Thursday, police alleged Randal Halderman attacked a man in his garage without provocation. The alleged victim, 33-year-old Jeff Pritchett, lives in the same condominium complex as Halderman’s parents, according to the press release.
