REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Iceland’s civil protection agency says a volcano has erupted in southern Iceland.

The agency says in a statement that the eruption took place at around midnight (2000 EDT) in the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, the fifth largest glacier in Iceland.

The volcano is covered by an ice cap. Authorities have evacuated hundreds of people in the area 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of the capital, Reykjavik, for fear of flooding as the glacier melts.

The last time the volcano erupted was in the 1820s .
