VIENNA (AP) — Mathias Berthold will coach the Austrian men’s ski team after leading the German women to three gold medals at the Vancouver Olympics.

The Austrian ski federation announced the appointment Monday.

The 44-year-old Berthold replaces Toni Giger. Berthold had worked with the German federation for the past seven years. The Austrian was previously a slalom specialist who competed on the World Cup circuit in the 1980s and 90s.

Giger left after a disappointing season in which the Austrian men did not win a single downhill race or Olympic medal and Benjamin Raich was beaten for the overall World Cup championship by Carlo Janka of Switzerland.
