EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — An Everett police officer is scheduled to go to trial next month in connection with a fatal June shooting outside an Everett restaurant.

Officer Troy Meade is charged with first-degree manslaughter but Snohomish County prosecutors have filled out the paperwork to file a more serious charge of second-degree murder against Meade.

Meade is charged in the June 10 shooting death of Niles Meservey. The shooting happened as Meade was trying to get the drunken man out of his car.

Meservey’s family also filed a claim against the city of Everett, demanding up to $15 million.

The 11-year police veteran has pleaded not guilty and in court papers indicates he’ll maintain the shooting was in self defense.
