GRANITE FALLS, Wash. (AP) — A proposed expansion of a gravel mine in Snohomish County is being met with resistance by residents of Granite Falls, the small mountain town where the mine’s trucks would travel through.

The Herald of Everett reports that Menzel Lake Gravel has applied to the county to increase the size of its operation from 14 acres to 51 acres. And while the operation is not located within town limits, the trucks most likely would have to use Granite Falls streets to transport the gravel.

Under the proposal, the number of truck trips allowed in and out of the pit from 68 a day to 200 a day.

Granite Falls Mayor Haroon Saleem and members of the city council signed letters in protest, listing pedestrian safety, street capacity, past history and public opposition as reasons for fighting the plan.
