Community notebook: Columbia River Swim Team members shine at five-state meet

Julia Sanders won three events to lead the Columbia River Swim Team to a sixth-place finish at the Northwest Section Western Zone Age Group Swimming Championships.

Three other CRST swimmers won championships at the five-state meet, held March 19-21 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

In the 14-year-old girls division, Sanders won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.13 seconds, the 100 freestyle in 51.75, and the 100 butterfly in 55.58.

Other CRST champions were Wesley Tatum in the boys 15-18 200 free (1:48.59), Cassidy Brennan in the 11-year-old girls 100 butterfly (1:03.14), and Livi Cox in the 11-year-old girls 50 free (26.39).

CRST posted 258 points to finish sixth among more than 110 represented swim teams at the meet. Top swimmers from five states participated.

One week earlier, Sanders placed 10th in the 50 free (23.63) and 10th in the 100 butterfly (55.50) at the Northwest Senior Sectional Championships, also at Federal Way.

Women bowlers take county titles

Teresa Clawson and Trina Fenimore were the individual champions at the conclusion of the 29th annual United States Bowling Congress Clark County Women’s Bowling Championships.

Clawson won the division for women with averages above 155 pins per game. Fenimore won the division for women with averages of 155 or fewer pins. All scores were computed using handicapping.

The tournament was held over three weekends at Tiger Bowl in Battle Ground.

The team championship came down to the end of Sunday’s final session. The Unknown Foursome repeated as champion in the upper division. Brenda Laycock, Patricia Ellis, Bev Sisson and Cathi Terwilleger teamed for the top spot.

The Wannabees won for teams with lower averages. Members were Donna Davis, Nicole Curry, Vickie Wallace and Jan Jones.

Patricia Ellis and Clawson won a doubles title. The other doubles crown went to Linda Edwards and Yvonne Grazul.

The Clark County USBC will hold its 61st Open Tournament over three April weekends at Husted’s Hazel Dell Lanes.

King’s Way lacrosse records win

The King’s Way boys lacrosse team made a successful debut in the top division of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association on Saturday, defeating Stadium from Tacoma 11-4 at Columbia River High School.

Goalie Max Zandstra had 11 saves, and attack Zach Lindahl scored twice and had two assists.

Parker Dotsey, Jordan Goodspeed and Brock Beall scored two goals apiece for King’s Way. Also scoring goals were Jack Beall, Clayton Frank and Tyler Preston.

As the only high school lacrosse program in Southwest Washington, King’s Way draws players from around Clark County. King’s Way will play twice at home this week, hosting Seattle Prep at 8 p.m. Friday and Tahoma at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Both games are at Columbia River High School.

Area rugby teams split openers

Jode de Klerk scored two tries Saturday, helping the Prairie Wolf Pack to its first win in the Oregon Youth Rugby League.

Prairie defeated the Beaverton Barbarians, 27-15, improving to 1-1 in the league’s Division 1. In the same division, the Vancouver Sharks have a draw and a loss after the first two weekends of league play.

The Camas Mean Machine, a first-year club paying in Division 2 of Oregon Youth Rugby, defeated Pendleton 29-3 on Saturday for its first win. Brandon King had three tries, and Ryan Toutai had two tries and two conversion kicks for Camas.

Battle Ground is playing in Division 3, giving Clark County four high school boys rugby clubs this spring. Battle Ground won its March 13 opener, but did not report results of its Saturday visit to Eugene.

All four clubs are idle until April 3.
