PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — The state prison in Pendleton went into “modified lock down status” Tuesday morning after several inmates started fighting near the dining room.

The East Oregonian newspaper reports that inmates working in the laundry and kitchen are performing their assigned tasks, but officials have shut down all other activities until further notice.

Prison spokesman Douglas Harder says correctional officers had to use force to gain control of the situation and took a dozen inmates to the medium-security prison’s segregation unit.

He says a second fight broke out in a housing unit. Prison staff also had to use force to separate those inmates.
