ConAgra to close Wash. potato plant

PROSSER, Wash. (AP) — ConAgra Lamb Weston says it plans to close its potato processing plant here on May 30.

The company announced the decision to 250 workers on Thursday.

ConAgra spokesman Jeff Mochal told the Tri-City Herald that the decision is a reflection of the economy and a soft market for frozen potato products. He also said the Prosser plant, located about 45 miles southeast of Yakima, is the most expensive to operate in the region.

Mochal said some jobs may be available for displaced workers at other ConAgra operations in the region. A frozen food warehouse, which employs 30 people, will stay open. Mochal said the company has not yet decided how many the warehouse will employ once the plant closes.
