Some good starts to spring break

Today is the last day to see the Jason Phelps exhibit at the Angst Gallery in downtown Vancouver. Phelps uses a metallic color scheme and works with found objects from regional rivers, oceans and deserts. His exhibit studies myth and metaphors.

Hours: Noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays or by appointment.

The exhibit is just one of several weekend entertainment options in Clark County and Portland. Others include the Cathlapotle Plankhouse’s seasonal opening and spring break fun at the Oregon Zoo.

Museum hosts quilt displays, demonstrations

The North Clark Historical Museum’s annual Quilt Show is happening this weekend. Woodland quilter Nancy Johnson will be the featured quilter at the show. Amboy quilter Barbara Sizemore will demonstrate her spinning and weaving technique, as well. Other crafters will offer knitting, crocheting and embroidery demonstrations.

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Plankhouse opens for season in Ridgefield

The Cathlapotle Plankhouse opens on the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge this weekend. Several activities will be offered to celebrate the plankhouse’s opening. Refuge tours and children’s activities are among the festivities at the plankhouse. In addition, historian Tom Wilson will give a presentation and discuss Lewis and Clark, who stopped on the refuge during their expedition.

When: Sunday. Tours and activities will be offered from noon to 4 p.m. and Wilson’s presentation is at 1 p.m.

Where: Cathlapotle Plankhouse on the Carty Unit of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, on Northwest Main Avenue, north of Pioneer Street, Ridgefield.

Admission: Refuge admission is $3 per vehicle.

Zoo celebrates spring break

Families can celebrate spring break with the Oregon Zoo Spring Break Party, continuing through Friday. The festivities include animal enrichment activities 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. As part of the enrichment events, animals will receive treats and take part in activities. Zookeepers will also give talks, offering insights into the lives and personalities of the zoo’s animals.

When: The zoo’s spring break activities continue through Friday. The zoo is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Admission: $9.75; $8.25 seniors 65 and older; and $6.75 children ages 3-11. A $2 parking fee applies per vehicle; people who arrive via light rail get a $1 discount on admission.

Vikings, dragons collide in ‘How to Train Your Dragon’

A young Viking teenager (voiced by Jay Baruchel) doesn’t fit in with his tribe’s tradition of slaying dragons in “How to Train Your Dragon,” in theaters this weekend. This displeases his father (Gerard Butler), who is also the town chief. While training to slay dragons, he befriends one of the dragons and tries to convince the others in his town that dragons aren’t evil. “How to Train Your Dragon” is rated PG and will be shown in 3-D at Cinetopia, Battle Ground Cinema and Regal Cascade 16 Cinemas, 1101 S.E. 160th Ave., Vancouver.
