Weather Eye: Hard rain and wind in the air

Quite an interesting weather scenario should come up today and Monday as a vigorous storm moves inland.

We are talking about heavy rain — about an inch locally, with upwards of four inches in the Olympics and two or three inches in the Coast Range mountains. Along with that, strong winds will develop tonight with wind speeds locally between 25 and 35 mph and gusts maybe to 50 mph. On the coast, a high-wind watch was issued Saturday afternoon.

Going further, after the cold front passes Monday, heavy snow is on tap for the mountains with another one or two feet possible. This is good news for the mountains. After the past couple of days, you can already see fresh snow on the mountain peaks, and even a mantle of white on Silver Star mountain to our east.

After that, the remainder of the week looks cool and showery.

So it appears March will be going out like a angry lion, albeit a couple days early. If you are off for spring break, you might head to the ocean beaches for some rare spring storm-watching.

If we have any clearing overnight this coming week, you can bet there will be areas of frost — keep that in mind if you live in a normally cool location. The garden centers were busy selling spring and summer plants on Saturday with customers filling shopping carts. If you bought some, keep a weather eye out — It’s still plenty early for tender plants with frost possible in the urban areas at least into early or mid-May.

Enjoy your week — you will have something to write home about, weatherwise, the next few days.
