March to get a whole lot wetter

Nearly an inch of rain expected to fall today

Ready for a hard rain? It’s coming Monday, weather experts say.

“We’re expecting almost an inch of rain during the day,” Liana Ramirez said. She is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland. And she said wind gusts might hit 20 to 25 today.

“We had a nice winter and now everything has to catch up with us,” she said. She said more showers are expected Tuesday and Wednesday.

Vancouver’s Steve Pierce put things in perspective with these thoughts:

“Vancouver’s Pearson Field has recorded a little more than 2 inches of precipitation for the month of March so far, which is more than an inch below normal. But, with only three days left in the month, we could easily make up that deficit with a much stronger system on tap for (today). Some areas around Clark County could see as much as 1 inch or more of precipitation through Tuesday morning, likely making this one of the strongest storms in the past month or two.

“This system looks more like a midwinter storm system, with blustery winds expected even in the valley. High winds are expected at the coast, and winter storm warnings are in effect for the Cascades, where they could see more than a foot of new snow down to pass levels.”

Pierce is an executive board member with the local chapter of the American Meteorological Society.

So, it looks like March was a lamb for much of the month but will go out like a lion.
