Mayor Tim Leavitt announced Monday that he will endorse Councilor Bart Hansen for Vancouver City Council in November’s election.

Hansen, 35, was appointed in January to Position 4, Leavitt’s vacated seat on council; the city charter requires that Hansen run this year to retain the seat.

No one else has announced publicly that they will run for the seat. The winner of this year’s election will also have to run again in 2011, when Leavitt’s term would have expired.

“Bart has demonstrated to me the important ability to listen and make thoughtful, rational and timely decisions about city issues,” Leavitt said in a press release. “He is a strong advocate for families and safety, and will be a fine council member for our citizens.”

Hansen, a Vancouver native and graduate of Vancouver Public Schools, works as office services manager for Clark Public Utilities. He is married and has two young children. They live in the Minnehaha neighborhood.

“I’m honored to have earned his endorsement, and look forward to working with Mayor Leavitt and the city council to continue moving our city forward,” Hansen said.
