NEW YORK (AP) — A choked-up Al Kaline says Tigers fans respectfully disagree with the late Ernie Harwell’s assertion that Vin Scully was the greatest announcer of all time.

The Hall of Fame Detroit outfielder was in New York on Wednesday night to accept the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award for sports broadcasting on Harwell’s behalf, a day after the announcer died at 92 following a monthslong battle with cancer.

Kaline recalls that when Harwell asked him to attend the awards ceremony, he said he believed Scully was the greatest announcer of all time.

Kaline says that standing in for Harwell is like pinch-hitting for Ted Williams.
