EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — Two people in Snohomish County have been diagnosed with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis.

The county health officer expects it will cost $140,000 to treat the two people and investigate whether the disease has spread to others.

Dr. Gary Goldbaum told The Herald newspaper of Everett he could not give any other information about the patients because of privacy concerns.

Goldbaum says the disease is not spread through casual contact. It will take several more weeks to know if there are any additional cases.

Treatment of patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis is more expensive because of the special types of antibiotic medications they must take. Patients with this kind of TB make have to take medication for 18 to 24 months.
