Vancouver announces ways to join in budget preparations

To better prepare for the challenges ahead, the city of Vancouver is asking residents to participate, with a twist, in a “Community Views” meeting, starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, the city said in a release.

Residents will have two options for directly participating: Go to the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 S.E. Columbia Way, and be part of the full Community Views event, or watch live on CVTV Channel 23 or online at http://www.cvtv.org, and participate using your computer’s Internet connection or a “smart” Web-enabled cell phone.

The Community Views meeting on Tuesday is just one of the ways the city is reaching out to better understand the community’s priorities and values as part of a budget-cutting process known as Horizons.

During the meeting, participants at the water center will be polled on priorities and ideas using “clicker” keypads. The devices are designed to make offering your views easy, efficient and anonymous. To participate in person, please RSVP at events@ci.vancouver.wa.us or call 487-8611 by Monday to ensure a seat.

To join in the polling online or on a smart phone:

• Tune into the Community Views on CVTV or online.

• Go to the http://www.rwpoll.com When prompted, key in the access code “Vancouver” to participate.

• Watch the Community Views live and follow along with the group at the water center, keying in your personal responses during polling questions. On your computer or Web-enabled cell phone, you’ll be able to see both the question and the collective responses of everyone who takes part.

• Special note: If you have a BlackBerry or iPhone, you can enhance the experience by downloading a free application in advance at http://www.rwpoll.com/download.aspx.

There is no charge to log into the polling site, but participants are responsible for their own Internet access. For more information, please visit http://www.cityofvancouver.us/horizons, prior to the event.

Other city of Vancouver Horizons outreach opportunities include an online community survey now under way at http://www.cityofvancouver.us; a series of small focus groups with randomly selected Vancouver residents; a meeting with key community stakeholders; and a scientifically valid telephone community survey, the results of which are now available in a report online, also at www.cityofvancouver.us.
