Vancouver office workers save ducklings

A mother duck and 12 ducklings were on the receiving end of a good deed Monday, as five office workers gently ushered the family two blocks toward the river through downtown Vancouver.

“They were pacing in front of our office this morning, so we thought we’d round up a couple people from the office and herd them,” said Taunya James, an employee at the Washington state Department of Social & Health Services office at Harney Street and Evergreen Boulevard.

James and four of her coworkers were escorting the ducks south on Harney when the unusual street parade was spotted by Trisha Kraff, an officer with Clark County Animal Control. Kraff turned her van around and followed the group with lights flashing, as the group herded the ducks into The Columbian’s west parking lot.

Kraff then expertly captured the duck and ducklings and loaded them into her van. She planned to release them to the Columbia River immediately.

Kraff said animal control gets a lot of calls about errant ducks, ducklings, geese and goslings this time of year.

“This is the time of year they hatch,” she said.
