— An electrical malfunction was determined to be the likely cause of an early morning structure fire at a home in the 2900 block of E. 28th St., although the investigation is not complete.

It took firefighters slightly more than 20 minutes to get the fire under control. It was reported at 6:19 a.m. and classified as under control at 6:42 a.m., according to Chris Moen, a Vancouver Fire Department spokesman.

The fire originated in a difficult to reach crawl space beneath the home, Moen said. The basement area was filled with items that firefighters planned to sort through in an effort to more directly stifle the fire source.

“We’ll probably be here for a while,” Moen said at the time.

Fire crews started leaving the scene at about 10 a.m., said Capt. Kevin Murray.

When firefighters arrived at the home, the lone resident, a male, was safely outside. A working smoke detector triggered the man's escape.

A fire marshal was at the scene this morning beginning an investigation. Murray said the fire was caused by some sort of electrical malfunction and a more specific finding may not come.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
