The Kelso Hilanders certainly did not mind their stay in Class 4A baseball.

Kelso pounded out 13 hits Thursday and breezed to an 11-3 victory over Evergreen in the championship game of the Class 4A district tournament at Propstra Stadium.

It is the second consecutive 4A district title for the Hilanders, who will be moving back to Class 3A next school year after two years as a 4A school

“It always feels good to win once. To win it two years in a row feels even better,” said Kelso’s Makaio Mobbs, who had three hits, including a solo home run.

Kelso will host Bothell in a bi-district playoff game Saturday, while Evergreen will hit the road to play Skyline. The winners of those bi-district playoffs will qualify for state.

“Our season’s just begun,” Evergreen coach Chad Burchett said. “So we travel, and they stay at home. We both have to beat a great team. If we beat a great team, we’re in the tourney.”

Kelso scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead, then added three runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings. Brandon Middleton hit a towering home run, and Justin Gillen had two doubles and drove in three runs.

Blake Giles pitched a complete game for the Hilanders, striking out four.

Evergreen’s Austin Hadley drove in all three runs for Evergreen, one each in the second, fourth, and sixth innings. Evergreen managed six hits — all singles — off of Giles.

Evergreen struggled in the field, committing five errors. Burchett noted those probably came from nerves, for playing in such a big game. Plus, he added, the way Kelso was hitting, those errors would not have made a difference.

“For us to get to the championship game this year is a huge accomplishment,” Burchett said.

Even after the loss, Burchett reminded his players that they are not done with the season.

Softball

Prairie 3, Camas 1 — Jessi Duncan limited to Camas to two hits while striking out 12 to lead the Falcons to the Class 3A district championship game.

Prairie will face Union at 5 p.m. at Fort Vancouver High School to the district title. Camas will advance to next week’s bi-district tournament as the 3A GSHL’s No. 3 seed.

Chantal Paradis, Jessica McDonald and Duncan all had doubles for Prairie.

Boys soccer

White Salmon 3, Stevenson 1 — The Bruins (16-1-1) won the 1A district title, scoring all three goals in the second half. They will next take on Seattle Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Washougal.

Aaron Cabrera scored a goal and assisted on Francisco Villanueva’s goal. Cristian Olivares had the third White Salmon goal.

Nate Sharp scored Stevenson’s goal in the second half.

Golf

Elizabeth Scherrette of King’s Way Christian cut seven strokes off her score from the first round to win the Class 2B/1B district golf title at Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis.

Scherrette had a two-round total of 193, three strokes better than Christine You of North Beach.

Columbia Adventist’s Jaci Allison also clinched a spot to the state tournament by placing seventh.

Zachary Buerkle of King’s Way placed third in the boys tournament. Also qualifying for state from King’s Way were Chris Crenshaw and Sean Peterson.
