KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) — Farmers on the upper Klamath Basin’s federal irrigation project will have to wait 10 days to start tapping water flowing through canals to water their fields.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation says it will take that long to fill the miles of canals on the Klamath Reclamation Project after water begins flowing Wednesday out of Upper Klamath Lake.
Klamath Irrigation District is first in line, and district manager Dave Solem tells the Herald and News that it will take careful management to keep the water flowing, because the lake is barely above the minimum needed for endangered fish in the lake.
The irrigation project has had to cut way back on water this year due to drought and demands for protected fish.
