BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Neven Subotic, a defender who grew up in Salt Lake City and played for U.S. youth national teams, has been picked for Serbia’s preliminary World Cup roster.

The 21-year-old, who plays for Borussia Dortmund in Germany, was on the U.S. team at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship for players under 17. He played twice for the U.S. Under-20 team, then left the American program after he was bypassed by coach Thomas Rongen for the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Subotic made his debut for Serbia’s national team in March 2009.

He was born in Serbia, and his family moved to Utah when he was young.
