BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — A British man accused of having sex with dogs pleaded guilty Tuesday in Bellingham to animal abuse and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Whatcom County Superior Court Judge Charles Snyder also ordered 51-year-old Stephen Clarke of of Peterborough, England, to pay $1,000 to the Whatcom Humane Society.

The Bellingham Herald reports Clarke has nearly completed his jail time. He was arrested last month in a raid by federal agents on property near Sumas they believe was used for a bestiality operation.

Clarke could have been sentenced to up to three months in jail, but Whatcom Prosecutor Dave McEachran agreed to the low-end sentence for Clark to free up jail space and get rid of him. After his release he may be deported.
