Mail carriers food drive nets 155,000 pounds
Wednesday, May 12, 2010
Vancouver-area residents turned over 155,000 pounds of food during the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, local organizer Cathy Hulse said.
The figure came in a little shy of the 156,000 gathered last year for the Clark County Stop Hunger Warehouse. Hulse said organizers were pleased with the contribution, especially at a time of economic uncertainty and in an area afflicted by high unemployment.
“Our poor areas were poorer, and the other people just stepped up,” she said.
The letter carriers’ annual effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive.
