The Port of Portland on Tuesday announced it has recruited a new international shipping service to provide regional exporters with direct access to ports in Japan.

Westwood Shipping Lines, a subsidiary of Weyerhaeuser Co., will provide monthly service starting July 11, with space for more than 200 containers, under a trial six-month contract. If enough demand exists from exporters, port officials say the service could be extended beyond six months.

Westwood’s Portland service will carry non-refrigerated, containerized agricultural products including hay, as well as paper products and other commodities from the Willamette Valley, upriver and from inland customers.

Ports of call in Japan will include Shimizu, Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya, as well as Busan, South Korea. Westwood provides service to more ports in Japan on a direct call basis than any other carrier, according to the port.
