REDMOND, Ore. (AP) — A World War II veteran pilot has died in a small plane crash in Central Oregon.
The Bulletin newspaper in Bend reported that 87-year-old Sheldon Arnett died Friday when his Piper PA-24 Comanche pitched up, rolled and hit the ground at Redmond Airport as he was taking off on a flight to Burns.
Arnett began flying more than six decades ago as a 20-year-old pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps.
When the war ended, he started a family and found success in several businesses in Central Oregon.
