ARLINGTON, Va. — Venture capital investors saw higher returns in the quarter ending Dec. 31 and for 2009, compared with a year ago, according to a National Venture Capital Association report released Friday.

Investors saw an average return of 3.3 percent for the quarter and 3 percent for the year. That’s compared to a 12.5 percent decline for the same quarter of 2008 and a 16.5 percent decline for all of 2008.

But performance continued to fall compared with five years and 10 years ago, according to the Cambridge Associates LLC, U.S. Venture Capital Index, the Association’s performance benchmark. The longer-term horizons of 15 and 20 years showed mild improvement and continued to outperform public market indices.
