PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Treasurer Ted Wheeler will get the chance to run for election to his post after defeating veteran politician Rick Metsger.

He had 61 percent of the votes with 58 percent of the expected vote counted.

Wheeler was Multnomah County chairman when he was appointed to the Treasurer’s office following the death of then-Treasurer Ben Westlund in March. Metsger, a former state Senator, came out of political retirement after Westlund’s death.

Wheeler will face Republican Chris Telfer in the general election, a Bend accountant who ran unopposed.
