PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Susan Castillo’s bid for a third term as Oregon’s superintendent of public instruction remains too close to call.

Castillo leads Ron Maurer 50.3 percent to 49.7 percent with 98 percent of the expected vote counted Wednesday afternoon.

Castillo had the backing of the state’s public teachers’ union and campaigned on raising Oregon’s high school diploma standards.

Maurer is a two-term state Representative from Grants Pass. He says the state public education office needs to be streamlined and more help given to school districts.
