WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man convicted of violently raping a retired teacher at knifepoint has been sentenced to a minimum of 55 years in prison.

A Worcester Superior Court judge on Tuesday sentenced 38-year-old Michael Bresnahan to 40 to 50 years in prison and to a consecutive term of life imprisonment on aggravated rape, kidnapping, burglary and armed assault charges stemming from the August 2007 attack in the 61-year-old woman’s Winchendon home.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that Bresnahan is eligible for parole after 15 years of the life sentence, which would not begin until he completed or was paroled from the 40- to 50-year term.

Bresnahan was arrested in August 2008 in Cottage Grove, Ore. after the case was featured on “America’s Most Wanted.”

He claimed the sex was consensual.
