A legally blind Vancouver man falsely told police he was robbed of his guide cane by two young males during a Friday light rail trip to a Portland shopping center, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office issued a news bulletin Tuesday announcing the theft and asking for help in locating the suspects. They sent an e-mail Wednesday saying the victim’s family saw media reports and informed them that the incident was untrue.

James Davis, 40, could be charged with initiating a false police report. The case has been sent to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office for review, according to Detective Jim Strovink, a sheriff’s spokesman.

Davis had told police he was exiting a Max train around noon Friday when two young males grabbed and stripped him of his cane.

“The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office wishes to recognize the vast numbers of individuals who first heard of this reported despicable crime and came forward so generously and compassionately with offers to assist this victim,”
