NEW YORK (AP) — Rays reliever J.P. Howell has had season-ending surgery on his left shoulder, a disappointing blow to Tampa Bay’s bullpen.

The operation was performed Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. The Rays say they are optimistic that Howell will be ready for the start of the 2011 season.

Howell, who had 17 saves last season and 79 strikeouts in 66 2-3 innings, hasn’t pitched this season for the Rays, who own the best record in baseball at 28-11.

The left-hander had to halt a simulated game Monday just after starting because of discomfort in the shoulder.
