BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Boca Juniors midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme has had left knee surgery, which is likely to keep him out of early season matches with his Argentine club.
Riquelme had surgery in Buenos Aires on Wednesday after picking up the injury in the second-to-last game of the season against Argentinos Juniors.
It has been a difficult year for Riquelme, a former Argentine international who has been overlooked for a place on the national team by Diego Maradona, who took over as coach late in 2008.
