Four victims received simulated treatment Thursday morning in a mock DUI crash involving two vehicles at Columbia River High School.

Clark County Fire District 6, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and American Medical Response participated in an attempt “to give students a first hand look at the dangers of drinking and driving,” according to a District 6 spokeswoman.

A release announcing the simulation included this statistic, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: In 2006, 20 percent of teens involved in traffic crashes were under the influence of alcohol.

Traffic crashes, according to the release, continue to be the leading cause of death for teenagers.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extract the students from wrecked vehicles. The 9 a.m. event was scheduled to remind students about the dangers of drinking and driving as their June 5 prom nears.
