SEATTLE (AP) — Students at Seattle’s Roosevelt High School are rediscovering cursive writing.
The Seattle Times says Latin teacher Nora MacDonald came up with the idea of an hour-long refresher course in cursive after noticing most of her students were printing — and that was often messy. So for the past two years, MacDonald has invited friend and retired third-grade teacher JoAnne Jugum to give the review.
Washington state’s education department no longer insists that cursive be taught, though many elementary schools still do. MacDonald says there’s a correlation between taking pride in one’s handwriting and taking pride in one’s school work.
