Will 100-pound salmon return to Elwha?

PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — When two dams are removed from the Elwha, will the legendary 100-pound salmon return to the river on the Olympic Peninsula?

Members of the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe, whose members have fished the Elwha for centuries, say they have stories of fish that big in the river. The Elwha has been blocked for nearly a century by the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams, which are to be removed by 2014 to restore the fish run.

National Park Service fisheries biologist Brian Winter says the big fish are possible. He says salmon that big are found in Alaskan waters, and eventually the environment that created the 100-pounders should return to the Elwha.
