SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A 37-mile portion of the Centennial Trail in Spokane County will become part of the National Trails System.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Tuesday that it is among 31 trails in 15 states to earn the designation.

The Centennial Trail is paved and runs along the Spokane River from Riverside State Park west of Spokane all the way past Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. It is used by 2 million people per year.

The National Trails System dates to 1971 and recognizes trails that link communities to recreational opportunities on public lands.
