YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — The Yakima City Council has voted against requiring city contractors use a federal program that checks a worker’s eligibility to work in the United States.
In a 4-3 vote Tuesday, the council turned down a proposal to use the E-Verify system — a free, online program administered by the Department of Homeland Security.
Around the state, Clark, Whatcom and Pierce counties have implemented the federal program. The city of Lakewood also has approved E-Verify.
