The cause of an early morning fire at a condominium complex remains unclear, but the havoc it wreaked is starting to come into view: a preliminary damage estimate of Three Peaks Condominiums units 33 and 34 amounted to a combined $400,000.

The two units were evacuated Thursday morning after a fire broke out in unit 34 of the complex, located at 1414 Brandt Road.

The condo’s lone occupant woke to the smell of smoke pouring out from her living area. She ran out of her house and alerted her neighbors in an adjoining unit.

In total, the fire displaced six residents in two condos. They’re being helped by the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

One woman was examined on scene for smoke inhalation. There were no injuries reported.

The damage estimate includes the structure’s value, as well as its contents.

An investigation to determine what caused the fire is ongoing.

A fire department spokesman advised closing the door on the way out of a burning structure.

“The key, and the most immediate thing, is to get out,” said Jim Flaherty, a Vancouver Fire Department spokesman. “If there’s anyway to shut the door on your way out that helps contain the fire in the immediate area. It buys us some time in the extinguishment of the fire.

“Once out, though, never go back in for anything.”
